Uh oh...I feel a Return To Forever thread coming on soon. I just started listening to RTF in the past month or so. More on that later...

Yeah, after I saw the reunion tour last year I put together a 2 CD compilation (I didn't care for the comp that was officially released). Lots of good memories!

I have the CD set from that reunion tour on hand, but haven't listened to it yet.
I started off at the beginning with the two albums RTF and Light As A Feather. It's interesting how he changed the sound drastically after these two. I've only listened to Romantic Warrior from the jazz/rock RTF era so far, and I'm liking it quite a bit. I have three others on hand (thanks for the local library ) but haven't loaded them into the Zune yet.
I've known Stanley Clarke's music for decades, but never heard him in this context until now. Also, I never paid much attention to Al Di Meola, but have been spinning Casino as well. I grabbed a couple of Billy Cobham's titles also--Spectrum is one of them.
Seems odd I'm just hearing all of this now, but part of my problem is that I listen to so much different music that there is a lot I've missed along the way.
I also just got into Tribute To Jack Johnson--I'd had Panthalassa for awhile, but I still wasn't prepared for TTJJ! John McLaughlin really rips that one end to end! Love that one riff section toward the end (known as "Right Off (Take 12)" from the Complete JJ Sessions). _________________ -= N =-

Yeah, it's a bit of a shocker going from "Captain Marvel" and "Spain" when all of a sudden you get "Hymn Of The 7th Galaxy" and "Space Circus". But it's all good stuff! Of course, the personnel on the first two RTF albums were completely different as well before Corea got the classic band together. My favorite album of all of these is Where Have I Known You Before. Great compositions and tremendous playing!

That was one of the last albums I bought. I'm not sure why I had skipped over it all these years. I think I went and got Musicmagic and was so disappointed by it, mainly because Gayle Moran's vocals were all over the place - and that ain't a good thing. What I really love about Romantic Warrior is that it's more acoustic than the previous three albums.

For DiMeola I highly recommend his Elegant Gypsy album. There's an acoustic duet he does with Paco DeLucia called "Mediterranean Sundance" that will just blow you away! One of my favorite Cobham albums is Crosswinds, with the Brecker Brothers on horns. Very funky stuff.

I don't have the compete sessions, just the original album, but it's definitely a monster! I've turned a lot of people onto that one, especially those who weren't all that crazy about Miles' electric stuff.
Speaking of McLaughlin, I pulled out an album that he did with Shakti several years ago. I forgot I had it in my collection but saw him on the Ovation channel reuniting him with Shakti. I forgot what a killer album that was. It's on my to-do list for LP cleanups!

One album I really like is Captain Marvel...by Stan Getz. Just about the same original RTF lineup in the rhythm section, but Getz is really on his game here. Oddly enough, despite all the good versions of "La Fiesta" Chick Corea has done with RTF, with Gary Burton, and on his own, Getz's is probably one of my favorite versions. On the flip side of things, the "Sometime Ago - La Fiesta" piece on the first RTF album is also a favorite, as drawn out as it is. I have to get around to those other RTF albums soon!

Sounds like I'll skip Musicmagic. Romantic Warrior IS pretty good! On that one, I can hear Corea's style that he'd use on later albums, including some of the GRP recordings (Elektric Band).

Cool--I've got that one in the pile, and I think one or two others from the same era. I've had Rite Of Strings with Jean-Luc Ponty and Stanley Clarke for years.

Most of the Sessions set is not even related to the actual album, but was recorded around the same time and, supposedly, used on other Miles recordings. The takes from "Right Off" and "Yesternow" are neat to hear without having been pieced together.

That's one I may have to find. I do have one or two Mahavishnu Orchestra CDs, but I listened to The Inner Mounting Flame a couple of days ago and still really couldn't get into it. I think I also have the Lost Trident Sessions somewhere, but I may have sold it.
Reminds me that I also have some Michal Urbaniak to listen to...so far I've liked a couple of tracks, but not everything. Yet. _________________ -= N =-

I re-read your post about the first two albums and realized I've never heard the first album Return To Forever. Is it anything like Light As A Feather? I recall seeing it, but never picked it up.

It is very similar. The CD is only four tracks--I believe the fourth track is a side-long work ("Sometime Ago - La Fiesta", which has a lengthy electric piano introduction and another interlude leading up to "La Fiesta", which is one of my all-time favorite RTF tracks). I think if you like the other album, you'll probably like this one. The title track, "Return To Forever", has Purim scatting on both of the main sections, and it has a similar Brazilian flavor to many of the parts.
I'm tired and not writing too coherently today. :sigh:
Anyway, I have had Romantic Warrior in heavy rotation for the past couple of weeks. Great stuff! _________________ -= N =-
